There is no doubt that contemporary art holds a great deal of attraction for children as it encompasses aspects of movement, color and playfulness that create a non-verbal language and offers them an experience that breaks down perceived barriers.
Child Like is an exhibition designed to stimulate children’s curiosity and imagination while at the same time allowing them to feel comfortable inside a space containing art works. Paintings from the TWMA collection have been selected for their accessibility in terms of colour, composition and technique for the 5 to 10 age group with the aim of encouraging children to express how they feel about the art work. This is an opportunity for the children to gain an understanding of the meaning of terms such as colour, line, shape, pattern, balance, contrast, rhythm and symmetry.
To some the world of contemporary art can be difficult to comprehend. Child Like will answer some basic questions and assist the viewer, both young and old, in their ability to relate to, and enjoy, contemporary art.
