George Baldessin installation view

21 November 2009 - 14 March 2010

The exhibition George Baldessin explores the artist’s remarkable, distinctive contribution to Australian art, selecting paintings and drawings as well as the better known etchings and sculptures from the significant body of work produced by Baldessin before his premature death at the age of 39 in 1978. The Italian born artist was notable for the European flavor he brought to art in Melbourne, imbuing the prevailing British style with an unaccustomed elegance, ambiguous sexuality and svelte craftsmanship.

George Baldessin provides an opportunity to view rarely seen works from public galleries, private collections and the artist’s estate. The exhibition has been co-curated by Elizabeth Cross and Maudie Palmer.
