Connect with art, place and ideas through TarraWarra Museum of Art’s learning experiences for primary, secondary and tertiary students and teachers in a remarkable setting. Students are invited to explore modern, contemporary and iconic artworks up close in our exhibitions, visible art storage (in March 2025), gallery and spectacular grounds. The Museum’s education programs are facilitated by experienced educators and tailored to suit your students’ needs and curriculum requirements. Fully subsidised programs and transport are available for qualifying schools.

Our Collection
TarraWarra Museum of Art holds a nationally significant collection of modern and contemporary Australian art. The majority of the works were gifted from the private collection of the late Eva Besen AO and Marc Besen AC, the Museum’s founders, who were passionate collectors of Australian art since the 1950s.

Eva and Marc Besen Centre
The latest addition to the Museum, the Eva and Marc Besen Centre, offers something novel and unexpected – visible art storage of over 300 works, a learning centre and a performance space – designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects. Observe the panoramic display of 64 storage screens holding the Museum’s significant collection as you arrive, and book yourself an art tour to appreciate the iconic artworks gifted to the nation by renowned philanthropists, the late Eva Besen AO and Marc Besen AC.

Grounds and Surrounds
TarraWarra Museum of Art is situated at the apex of a hill, offering a spectacular, resonant and panoramic experience of the Yarra Valley—Wurundjeri Country—with spectacular views of the surrounding mountain ranges and distant Toolangi rainforest across planted vines, native bushland and farmland.
With its lush lawns and avenue planting, visitors can experience the landscape setting, seasonal displays of the natural surrounds, and the Museum’s outdoor sculptures, by taking a meandering pathway that winds around the Museum grounds – expanding later this year to a new sculpture walk. Visitors are also invited to learn more about art project Untitled (seven monuments), located in Healesville.

The Museum will invoice your school or university. You are also welcome to pay at the Museum’s Reception on the day of your visit.
TarraWarra Museum of Art is open for bookings 10am–5pm, Tuesday to Friday.
The Museum is closed to the public on Mondays, however in certain circumstances we may be able to accommodate school bookings.
With prior booking, student groups can eat a snack on the lower deck near the ornamental lake, under teacher supervision. Students will need to take all their rubbish home afterwards.
The Museum is situated amongst a working vineyard in undulating terrain, so students need to move in a respectful and safe manner throughout the grounds under teacher supervision. There are many lovely parks in nearby Healesville where students can alternatively enjoy their lunch.
Please ask staff at Reception for a map noting these locations. Food or drink must not be consumed in the Museum for the protection of the artwork.
Students may use cameras and mobile devices to take photos of the exhibition for their personal use, unless otherwise signposted. For the protection of artworks, the use of tripods, flash and selfie sticks is not permitted. We recommend that students refrain from using their phones during tours so they can concentrate on looking, listening and actively engaging in conversation about the exhibition and the artworks. (Except for photographic purposes.)
We kindly request that all phones and electronic devices are set to silent before entering the Museum.
As part of your visit, our experienced educators will provide you with worksheets containing information relevant to your booking. Education resources are provided by the LE program for certain cohorts. Please enquire about the education resources suitable for your group. If you do plan on bringing a worksheet please ensure students use a grey lead pencil as pens are not permitted within the museum. Please inform the museum if you require clipboards for your visit.
